New-to-me Movies in January

My movie watching habits have changed significantly over the past several months. It used to be that I would go to the theaters about 2-4 times a month to see new movies. Now I’m lucky if I go once a month, mostly due to financial reasons. Also, when I get access to Netflix (while housesitting), I tend to not want to watch new-to-me movies and go for TV shows instead.

For example, last month I watched significant amounts of Doctor Who (season three and most of four) and The X-Files (rewatched all of season one). So I’m thinking I might start posting my TV watching thoughts more often, though I’m not how I want to approach that yet. In the meantime…,

January Movies:

1. 2 Guns (2013)
2. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013)

REVIEWS (behind the cut):

1. 2 Guns (2013)

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg make a great comedic team and their interactions are really what make this one worth watching. Otherwise, the story of a DEA agent and a naval intelligence officer, who both don’t realize the other man is also an officer under cover, is a rather convoluted story. Entertaining on the whole, but some of it doesn’t make sense in terms of characters and decisions and so on.

2. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013)

While not a bad movie, it’s not exactly great either. When the safe haven is attacked and the protection around the camp falters, leaving all the half bloods at risk, Percy and his friends go in search of the Golden Fleece, which might save them all.

I loved the cab driving oracles, who cracked me up, and the action was fun enough, so I was entertained.

My biggest annoyance for me was Annabeth, the daughter of the goddess of wisdom, who was generally awesome in the first movie and is now so much weaker in this one. She no longer has any fight it seems, but wait, there’s another kick ass girl Clarisse, daughter of the god of war, to take her place in terms of the “strong woman” role. Maybe the producers felt they couldn’t have two awesome, strong, wise women in the same movie…?
